Scholarship Management and Account Reporting for Tenpins (SMART)
*SMART is a USBC-managed scholarship management program for funds awarded through bowling leagues/tournaments. Funds become available upon graduation and are valid eight (8) years after high school graduation if earned prior to that date, and eight (8) years after the date funds were earned if already graduated. SMART funds cannot be used prior to high school graduation.
- Example 1: Student A graduating in 2026 has until 2034 to use all their funds earned as of 2022
- Example 2: Student B who graduated in 2018 has until 2026 to use all their funds earned up until 2018. All funds earned thereafter have a further 8 years from the time they earned a scholarship (e.g. a Pepsi 2022 scholarship has an expiration date of 2030).
Funds must be sent to the school directly—any funds in excess of expenses may be issued back to you as a “refund check.” If students are receiving financial aid, reach out to the school’s financial aid office in case SMART scholarships affect their other awards/aid.
Current university students receiving a Federal Pell Grant in the 2022-2023 academic year can apply for a SMART Pell Grant Match, essentially doubling their award. Bowlers must have bowled at least two years of USBC membership history, with one year being youth.
JBT
For those who bowl on the JBT Southwest Tour (including the Main Event), please be advised they run separately from SMART. Funds earned will expire on the awardee’s 23rd birthday, regardless of the age of the bowler when they earned the scholarship. You may be reimbursed for school-related expenses—electronics/books must be purchased via your school’s bookstore if you choose to buy one with JBT scholarship funds. The JBT recommends having checks sent directly to you.
